:::Yeah, at least I currently don't need CheckUser for finding his sockpuppets, but the automatic IP ban should at least work, I am suspecting we have a problem with it. --Urwumpe 18:20, 18 July 2008 (BST)

:::::Tell me something I don't know yet. But that does not change the problem, that the automatic IP ban did not work in the last weeks. He was not using proxies in the beginning and the explicit IP ban hit him hard when I did not trust the automatic IP ban. Now I explicitly locked the proxy he was using Friday, after summoning dark magic again for getting the connection details of him. --Urwumpe 19:10, 19 July 2008 (BST)

Sysop
Hi Urwumpe. Please restore my sysop status on this wiki. I am aware that I am extremely inactive, but occasionally I may need sysop status because I administer the server that OrbiterWiki is hosted on. I noticed your message regarding my demotion today because I am investigating technical trouble we are having with the server. (Fortunately, OrbiterWiki appears to be unaffected.)

In general, I would like to ask you to stop demoting inactive sysops altogether. I am not sure why you think people deserve punishment simply for being inactive. By all means, demote sysops who abuse their powers or whose account has been hijacked, but please don't demote people just because you can. Thanks. — Timwi 06:13, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

:Can't confirm you being demoted, I remember that I thought about it long ago but got told exactly what you just wrote about your status from Roman. But currently, the only right I can offer you, that you don't already have, is being a bot.

:Also, this was not for punishing people for being inactive, but for preventing unused privileged accounts from being abused by intruders, maybe you have heard of such a best practice. Its a difference if the account has full access rights, or if it is just a standard account, which can't cause damage that can't be fixed. The same happens everyday on many servers. --Urwumpe 09:02, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

Autoblocked
This is just getting wierd. I sent you an email this morning (my time zone), because I was blocked. I couldn't leave a message here and I couldn't edit anywhere including my user pages. This also happened a few days ago, but, it went away in a few hours. Well, now this morning's block went away, too. But, just to note, shortly after I was blocked (on my PC), I tried my iPad, it wasn't blocked. Same IP as they are both on the same LAN. Don't know what gives, but, just to let you know what's up. If it happens again, I'll let ya know. I don't know this guy CollinMoroney, nor is that my IP. Thanks, Arvil (talk) 19:46, 5 December 2020 (UTC)

:Oh, I am sorry, might be some old user+IP ban interfering with you. I don't read much mails on the weekend, so its possible, that I will see it in a few minutes when I take a look on the inbox..... Urwumpe (talk) 22:21, 5 December 2020 (UTC)

::Correction, it was a ban of today. I don't see the exact IP bans anymore, so I can't tell you if this was correct or just a glitch. The IP ban expires in 20 days. Please tell me, if more such events happen with different IPs or banned users. If your provider uses dynamic IPs (like most unless you pay extra), it is possible, some other customer had been part of a bot net. Otherwise: Houston, we have had a problem. :No problem, take your time, no worries. I kinda thought it’s tied to trying to keep the bad guys out, ugly at best (12K spam articles). So, I’ve been locked out for about 4 hours, each time I try I get various bad guys, IPs and ban tickets. Just now I couldn’t do this reply on my PC, but my iPad got in (don’t get that). Anyway, I’m on Verizon FIOS, don’t doubt that’s dynamic, makes sense I’ve gotten at least 6 banned users. Take your time, I imagine it might take awhile to figure it out. Thanks for your response.Arvil (talk) 00:56, 6 December 2020 (UTC)

Autoblock
Been blocked most of the last few days since last week. Copied the following onto my talk page to save until I could get in:

Urwumpe or anyone who happens here, I tried to add this to his talk page and was locked out. See the following. If this bug ever lets me back in, I'll copy/paste to his page.

Update, this thing finally let me in. still keep getting locked out. This time I'm in so opened up a new tab and did some editing, then locked out again here's a copy/paste of it.

You do not have permission to edit this page, for the following reason:

Your IP address has been automatically blocked because it was used by another user, who was blocked by ‪Urwumpe‬. The reason given is:

Autoblocked because your IP address has been recently used by "RichSherrill141".

The reason given for RichSherrill141's block is "Repeat spammer"

You may contact ‪Urwumpe‬ or one of the other administrators to discuss the block.

Note that you may not use the "Email this user" feature unless you have a valid email address registered in your user preferences and you have not been blocked from using it.

Your current IP address is 162.158.62.78, and the block ID is #37234. Please include all above details in any queries you make.

Each time I get locked it's a different banned user, IP, and ticket number. My IP is 108.16.24.141 if that helps. I'm Verizon FIOS and a Verizon support page said that it's dynamic, but, rarely changes, usually on power loss, etc. So, anyway, the bug is still there. Hoping you can figure it out when you get a chance. Thanks for listening.Arvil (talk) 03:32, 9 December 2020 (UTC)

Every few days the filter will let me in for a bit, so, this is what's happening, assuming it lets me save this. When you get a chance could you check into this. Thank you.Arvil (talk) 02:13, 11 December 2020 (UTC)

: The IP address belongs to Cloudflare, so maybe you are just using the same proxy as the spammer does --Urwumpe (talk) 02:35, 11 December 2020 (UTC)

::The filter hasn't let me in for a few days, so hopefully I can save this. Anyway, I think I figured out a couple of things. First, it seems Verizon has only so many IPs (Iv4), and isn't interested in buying more (Iv4 are gone, they would have to buy Iv6), so they have an internal MAN, and we all share the few IPs at the gate to the internet, so that's how some of us could have the same IP. Searching OribterWiki, I could not find a Cloudflare user, nor could I find any logged entries. Doing a DuckDuckGo search, the only reference I found was Cloudflare.com (see Cloudflare at Wikipedia, which some of its clients seem to be less than desirables, so maybe something came from there and got my IP involved. But, I'm thinking more along these lines: about the time I was blocked I had fixed some double-redirects, then I was working on the listing 'Uncategorized pages'. Almost all of them are spam pages, I was adding them to the Category: Articles Nominated for Deletion, and adding a couple of real pages I found to good categories. Then I was blocked. After being unblocked, I was again working the uncategorized list again, this time I created a Category: Spam moving pages there hoping to eliminate spam pages so I could find good pages better. Got blocked again, and here we are now. I think maybe the filter was thinking I was spamming when I was moving them to a spam category, makes sense in its point of view. So, I think I may have gotten myself inadvertently blocked with good intentions. If I can't be unblocked, the 27th is only a few days away, but I think I'll let those spam pages alone in case that's what did it. In my research, I have found how may bogus users are created daily and how many spam hits you get, so, it must be a nightmare for you every day just battling the bad guys. I would be very surprised you it doesn't drive you to drink heavily or something like that. Just thought you'd like to know that there are about 12900 spam pages on the uncategorized list and maybe a small handful of real articles there. Later, I'll try to search the good ones out and get them on good categories then what's left should be the bad stuff. Thanks, Arvil (talk) 04:00, 17 December 2020 (UTC)

:::Well, what should I say... If I give up now, the best would be shutting down the wiki completely. We really need a smarter solution than the IP blocks, if they are abusing Cloudflare for spamming us. Sadly, I can't even notify Cloudflare, that a customer is violating their TOS. --Urwumpe (talk) 11:56, 17 December 2020 (UTC)
