Closing velocity

The closing velocity of an object relative to another, is the difference between velocities of two objects whose orbit will intersect. This is especially interesting for estimating the impact risk of space debris.

In case of missiles, using homing guidance the closing velocity is the velocity where the missile will impact the target.
