The earliest found design is proposed by Bell Aircraft from March 1959, an arrow shaped lifting body with a rounded nose, protecting a nose window assembly for landing. It's design was heavily influenced by the state of atmospheric and hypersonic flight research in 1959, and would not have worked in reality, leading to the changes in the next iteration.
